How to cancel Proximus: the steps and what to check first

You cancel Proximus in MyProximus or by phone. Before you click, check three things: the age of your contract, any linked device and the equipment to return.

Cancelling a Proximus subscription takes a few minutes in MyProximus. What costs money is almost never the cancellation itself: it is a smartphone still tied to the contract, a modem that was never sent back, or a cancellation done by hand when the new operator could have handled it.

This guide relies on information published by Proximus and by BIPT, the Belgian telecom regulator, checked on 5 October 2026. It covers residential customers in Belgium. A separate section deals with business customers.

In short

  • You cancel in MyProximus, on the “My products” page, with the “Cancel your subscription” button. Proximus can also handle it for you.
  • After six months of contract, or if your contract is open-ended, the operator cannot charge you a cancellation fee.
  • One exception: a device you received for free or at a reduced price with the subscription. Its residual value can be claimed, but never after 24 months.
  • If you are switching operator for internet or TV, do not cancel yourself: the Easy Switch procedure hands the cancellation to the new operator.
  • The modem and the TV decoder are still yours to send back. Keep the proof of drop-off.

How do you cancel Proximus, step by step?

In MyProximus

Proximus describes the process on its page How to cancel Proximus subscription?:

  1. Log in to MyProximus.
  2. Open the “My products” page.
  3. At the very bottom of the page, choose “Cancel your subscription”.
  4. Follow the steps and keep the confirmation, with the end date it announces.

By phone or in writing

The same page states that Proximus can take care of the cancellation for you. Customer service answers on 0800 33 800.

Proximus’s consumer information document (in French) sets the general rule: you can cancel your contract, fixed-term or open-ended, in writing and at any time. BIPT adds that the operator must accept any written means, and that you do not have to give a reason.

Whatever the channel, ask for a written confirmation showing the end date. It is what you will need if a bill is disputed.

What should you check before cancelling?

1. Is your contract more than six months old?

This is the question that decides the fees. BIPT sums up the rule on its page Cancelling the contract:

Your situation What the operator can charge
Open-ended contract No cancellation fee
Fixed-term contract, six months old or more No cancellation fee
Fixed-term contract, less than six months old At most the subscription fees due until the end of the sixth month
Device received for free or at a reduced price On top of that, the residual value of the device, never after 24 months

At Proximus, unless stated otherwise, a residential contract is concluded for an open-ended period. And a fixed-term contract that reaches its term rolls over into an open-ended one. In most cases, then, there is no cancellation fee.

If you cancel in the fourth month of a fixed-term contract, the most that can be claimed is the two months of subscription left until the end of the sixth month.

2. Is a smartphone or another device tied to the subscription?

This is the exception that catches people out. If you received a device for free or at a reduced price when you signed up, Proximus can ask for compensation when you cancel, even after six months and even on an open-ended contract.

That compensation is capped. According to BIPT, it cannot exceed the value shown in the repayment table attached to your contract, it goes down by the same amount every month, and it disappears after 24 months.

An example, to give the order of magnitude. With a €240 discount on the phone, written off over 24 months, the value drops by €10 a month. Cancelling in the eighteenth month leaves €60 to pay. Your exact amount is the one in the table attached to your contract: find that document before you cancel.

3. Are you switching operator or stopping everything?

If you are moving to another operator for internet or TV, cancelling by hand is rarely the right move. Under the Easy Switch procedure, described by BIPT on its page Switching fixed operators?, the new operator terminates the old contract as soon as its own services are activated.

You need to give it:

  • your Proximus customer number;
  • your Easy Switch ID, a series of digits and letters shown in your customer area and on your bill;
  • the numbers to transfer or to cancel.

The benefit is concrete. Proximus must stop billing at the latest by the end of the day after it is notified of the transfer, which limits double billing. And the procedure provides for compensation: €10 per calendar day if the service interruption lasts more than one working day, €6 per day of delay on the agreed activation date, €30 per missed technician appointment.

Easy Switch does not apply to a partial switch. If you only move TV, or only internet, you have to cancel that service with Proximus yourself.

4. What equipment do you have to return?

The modem and the decoder provided by Proximus remain its property. Even with Easy Switch, returning them is up to you: the new operator does not take care of it.

Follow the return instructions Proximus sends you after the cancellation, respect the deadline it gives, and keep the proof of drop-off for several months. Equipment that is not returned gets billed, and that proof is the one thing that settles a dispute quickly.

When does the cancellation take effect?

The Proximus cancellation page does not announce a notice period for residential customers. The end date is given to you during the process.

The legal framework favours the customer. According to BIPT’s page on contract termination, after an automatic renewal, a consumer’s contract can be terminated at the time chosen by the customer, even immediately.

In practice, two habits:

  • state the end date you want, and check that it appears in the confirmation;
  • check your last bill. It should only cover the period up to that date.

What if I signed up less than 14 days ago?

Then it is not a cancellation but a withdrawal, and it is the better deal.

According to Proximus’s consumer information document, if you signed up at a distance or away from a point of sale, you can withdraw from the contract without penalty and without giving a reason within 14 calendar days. The period runs from the conclusion of the service contract, or from delivery when you only bought a product.

  • You make the request by phone on 0800 33 800, at proximus.be/resilier, or with the Proximus withdrawal form.
  • If the service has already started, you still owe an amount proportional to what was provided up to the withdrawal.
  • Proximus refunds you within 14 days of receiving your request, provided the products have been returned. Return costs are covered by Proximus if you follow its procedure.

This right does not apply to a contract signed in a shop.

Moving house or a death: do you really need to cancel?

Proximus handles both cases separately.

  • Moving house. The subscription can follow you to your new address. Cancelling and signing up again serves no purpose.
  • Death. There is a dedicated procedure for relatives. You can reach it from the cancellation page.

What about a business subscription?

The rules change, and this is where the nasty surprises are.

The legal protection described above also covers subscribers with at most 9 employees: no cancellation fee after six months. For other business customers, the law allows a notice period of up to one month after an automatic renewal, and the terms of the contract carry more weight.

Proximus says so itself in its consumer information document: fixed-term contracts for business customers are renewed automatically for periods of the same length, unless they are cancelled at the end of the term in the agreed way. The business general terms we consulted (in French), in their version dated 16 August 2021, provide for an initial term of one year, tacit renewal for one-year periods, and written notice at the latest three months before the end of the term to avoid it.

Three months before the anniversary date: that is a deadline that is easy to miss. Check which version of the terms applies to your order form, and write that date down on the day you sign. Proximus has a separate page for cancelling a business subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cost anything to cancel Proximus? For a residential customer, no, if the contract is open-ended or more than six months old. Two amounts can remain due: the residual value of a device tied to the subscription, for 24 months at most, and equipment that was not returned.

Do I need to send a registered letter? No. The law requires the operator to accept any written means, and Proximus offers the process in MyProximus. A registered letter is still useful if you want dated proof in a disputed case.

I am keeping my mobile number when I switch operator. Should I cancel? Ask the new operator to take over your number first. It is the one that organises the transfer. Cancelling beforehand can cost you the number.

Proximus keeps billing me after I cancelled. What can I do? Send your cancellation confirmation to customer service, on 0800 33 800 or through the contact form. If that does not solve it, the Telecommunications Ombudsman handles complaints free of charge: 02 223 06 06, plaintes@mediateurtelecom.be.

Can I cancel only part of my pack? Yes, but the price of the remaining services can change, since the pack discount goes away. Ask for the new price before you confirm. It is often a change of subscription rather than a cancellation.

Proximus is raising its prices. Can I leave without a fee? When the contract is changed, the law provides for a right to cancel without penalty, to be used at the latest within three months of the notification. There are exceptions, including an indexation written into the contract. The details are on the BIPT page cited above.

Where ABONEA helps, and where it stops

This guide helps you cancel. The hard part comes earlier: knowing what each subscription really costs, whether it is still worth it, and by what date you need to act.

That is what ABONEA does. You add your Proximus subscription with its amount and charge date, the app warns you before each charge, and a 1 to 5 rating brings out what you pay for without using. If you are cancelling a gym membership while you are at it, the guide How to cancel Basic-Fit follows the same logic.

And what ABONEA does not do:

  • it does not connect to any bank account;
  • it does not read your inbox;
  • it does not cancel anything on your behalf. It warns you, you decide, you cancel yourself.
